Just the Two of Us: Hong Kong

Posted by

It’s never easy to leave the kids at home and go overseas for a couple’s getaway.  It’s never easy for us but we try, Euben and I, every year to spend some moment just the two of us.

Two weekends ago, I joined Euben in Hong Kong towards the end of his business trip.  It was just for a few days and so we did only what we felt we needed – SLEEP, EAT and RELAX.

There was no pressure to see everything or anything.  We walked leisurely along Victoria Harbour, entered watch shops at Queens Road but didn’t buy anything, slowly sipped our coffee like we have all the time in the world, and kissed on the crowded streets of Kowloon like we didn’t care who’s watching…

SLEEP

Euben was on the road for most of August and September and with different time zones, I know his sleep was very much interrupted.  And with kids in the house, sleeping in on weekends, to both of us, is a real luxury.

Conrad Hong Kong, our hotel that weekend, gave us the respite we needed.  The big, comfortable bed and the nice view from the windows all made it difficult for us to get out of bed.  Although one morning I had to wake up early to catch Euben on CNBC.

Conrad is located in the Pacific Place complex hence a convenient choice in terms of food, shopping and public transportation.

RELAX

On Friday night, after Euben’s meetings were over, I brought him to the hotel’s spa for a relaxing aromatherapy massage.  They don’t have couple’s room so we had to do our massage in different rooms.

The treatment packages at Conrad were not cheap, but I knew that my hard-working husband needed a bit of this and so I did not think twice.   There was also a heated outdoor swimming pool, which we had planned to use, but the soft king-sized bed in our room beat the pool.

EAT

For our first dinner together, since we were at IFC building, we chose Tasty Congee & Noodle Wantun Shop which is located on the 3rd floor.  The queue was long but we waited because my husband said that their food is good, and they were.  The following day, while I was out in the city by myself, I ventured into the basement of Century Square for an experience at the popular Dim Sum Icon.  On the second night, we had to have rice already, and so went for Kokomi, a Japanese restaurant at the lower ground level of Pacific Place.  That same night, my husband brought me to Café Gray Deluxe on the 49th level of Upper House building.  He said he had to make a prior booking because he wanted to get us the corner table which had the best view.  And how lucky we were, it was a rare clear night in Hong Kong and small lights from distant buildings could be seen from where we stood.

On Saturday, the only full day we had together in Hong Kong, we slept in, walked unhurriedly to find breakfast, and took our time to finish our latte and cappuccino.

We didn’t have any itinerary but our love for seafood and fried rice took us all the way across to Kowloon trying to find Chuk Yuen Seafood Restaurant, a Chinese seafood restaurant famous with the locals.  It’s not fine dining, there was clanging of plates and the unrefined service crew, but the food there was worth it.

We took the ferry from Hong Kong Central to Kowloon and back.  It was convenient, fast and scenic.

We went back home to Singapore that night feeling relaxed, refreshed and rejuvenated.

  1. Looks like you had a good time. Your husband looks so much like Barack Obama in the first photo! We’ve just had the opposite experience. Our daughter has had her first foreign trip without us, on an educational visit to Spain. We’ve been home alone and it was ever so quiet without her!

    1. Hahaha he does, right, Tim? My hubby speaks on TV sometimes and whenever he does, I’d notice that his mannerisms were like Obama’s too when Obama delivers his speeches. Lucky F, must be nice to go overseas with classmates. 🙂

      1. I love that word “hubby” Amor! My grandmother used to say it and I thought it was confined to the English West Country. Good to know it’s used in Singapore! F enjoyed herself so much she didn’t want to come home. I’m trying to persuade her to write a guest blog, but haven’t been successful yet ! 🙂

        1. Oh she should. It’s very refreshing to read a blog from a child’s perspective. My son was my guest blogger for our visit to a car museum (Petersen), although he asked for payment for it (an Instagram account) 🙂 P.S. hmm and all along I thought ‘hubby’ is common. I hear it a lot around here.

  2. How wonderful to spend time together. It’s something that we don’t usually do, but definitely need to make a conscious effort to do. The food looks amazing in Hong Kong Amor. Great recommendations, thank you. Xx

    1. Thanks Lorelle. Although I’m always hesitant to leave the kids, our couple travel always ends up feeling right. We go home refreshed and ready to parent again. And when it’s just me and my hubby, there is usually no itinerary, so it’s a different set of adventures 🙂

  3. Hey lovely and informative sister, made me think of planning for the next holiday again. Kamiss ang food and the smell of chinese shop. Great to see Euben relaxing after a busy day.

  4. It is great that you take such vacations together, Amor. Must feel great to walk around the streets of Kowloon in a carefree way. You both look chilled and the food looks delicious…including the sight of the coffee and tarts 😉

    1. Thank you. It felt it good to be away just the two of us. The last time we did that was already a year ago when we went to Wimbledon for tennis. Now I’m already looking forward to the next one, next year hopefully. 🙂

  5. What a lovely and relaxing trip for two! It’s so nice you both make time to have some time together as a couple! Though, I’m sure it can also be difficult to leave the kids behind. And, Hong Kong is a great place to enjoy luxurious accommodation. It reminds me of our past trips there and we greatly enjoyed our time there too! Thanks for sharing!

    1. Hi! You are absolutely right. It’s always difficult to leave the kids behind. I used to cry on the way to the airport when my kids were way smaller. It gets better and better and at the end of the day, I appreciate the importance of spending some time with the husband, uninterrupted. 🙂

      1. Plus, you get the freedom to be yourselves together, without needing to revert to the roles of parents for a while…I’m sure this must give you time to reconnect with who you are as individuals and in a sense “recharge” yourselves to be even better parents to the kids once you’ve returned. 😊

  6. I enjoyed taking this little peek at your weekend getaway 🙂 The hotel, city views and food looked lovely! As a new parent, I totally get the luxury of sleeping in! It’s weird, I’ve never been to Hong Kong but I keep having a recurring dream where I’m someplace that looks very much like the view from your hotel window which showed the green hills. Maybe I’ll go there some day?! Great post!

    1. Oh my, Snow, that’s a sign, maybe it’s time for you to head to this part of the world soon. And when you do, do drop by Singapore as well, visit us. We’ll be happy to show you around. Meanwhile, stay warm on your side of the world! Happy wk ahead. 🙂

      1. Thanks! It is way overdue, I guess!! Hubby has visited both and enjoyed them – I’ve visited neither! I have a vision of myself swimming in the Mandarin Oriental’s infinity pool overlooking the city though I guess that’s something the locals never actually do 😀
        Happy week to you too!
        xx, Snow

        1. That’s a really nice vision! The infinity pool in Marina Bay Sands is quite famous here too. We don’t have many, or any, natural wonders here so we end up doing staycations every now and then 🙂 How nice it is if we have fjords and mountains like yours, but I can’t be too greedy ey hehehehe

  7. Thank you for this dose of Hong Kong – I think it is wonderful that you both take the time to do couple trips: very restorative & bonding!

I stayed at the Conrad several decades ago on a work trip and was thoroughly captivated by the location & the views! It was my first visit to Pacific Place (it was a new mall then) and spent so many hours wondering through it when I had time off.

A very satisfying virtual visit for me to familiar (we lived here for a bit in the 1980s) and new spots.

    1. Thanks for visiting this post Ju-Lyn. Wow HK in the 80s must be different? Oh I loved our stay at the Conrad and you’re right about the views!

My hubby likes to have a couple trip once a year. It’s wonderful but I always tear up before the flight – I’d miss the kids hahah. The farthest we’ve gone just the two of us was in the US for two weeks. But yeah we came back refreshed and renewed, ready to parent again. 🙂
